Microsoft Hackbox

Hackbox is internal tooling platform for the Microsoft Global Hackathon, a company-wide, multi-day, global event produced by The Microsoft Garage that brings employees from all over the world together to create, innovate, and hack on ideas that inspire them. It’s the largest private hackathon on the planet.

The Hackathon grew from small-scale events to a company-wide initiative, engaging all employees, fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity, and experimentation. Over time, it evolved to include external participants, went virtual in 2020 due to global circumstances, and later returned with both in-person and online collaborations in 2022, leveraging the Hackbox platform.

What I worked on

With a strong shift towards the digital realm, especially after the event went virtual in 2020, the Hackbox platform became the main tool for hackathon participants. Over the span of 17 months, I played a key role as a senior UX consultant, closely collaborating with the team to revamp the hackathon experience. We utilized a design sprint-style approach, organizing workshops to really dig into what users needed and diverge and ideate on possible solutions. This collaborative effort involved cross-functional teams coming together to decide on features that would truly enhance the platform.

We didn't stop there. We engaged in multiple rounds of user interviews, carefully listening to their thoughts on the prototype and allowing us to better grasp user motivations and needs. Armed with this understanding, we redefined user and stakeholder personas, a pivotal shift in the comprehensive redesign of the platform's information architecture and user flow, fine-tuning it to resonate more closely with what our users wanted and valued the most.
